Spring
Medium: Clay
Grade: Kindergarten
Our kindergarten artists try their hands at the traditional cherry blossom theme. However, instead of paint, they sculpted their blossoms out of clay. The three-dimensional blossoms, leaves, and butterflies were challenging for our young artists. Fortunately, this year’s kindergarteners are exceptional at executing multi-step instructions. This tribute to nature is a great expression of their first year at Del Mar Pines.

This project is a wink and a nod to the Japanese tea ceremony. It is also a tribute to the polka dotted creations of world-renowned artist Yayoi Kusama. Whether used as a table, cocktails, or tea tray; the bright and colorful artwork is a beautiful addition to any room. The emoji daisies reflect the sunny disposition of this year’s first-grade artists.

Second-grade
Our second-grade artists have created a painting called Soaring Kites. A kite symbolizes joy, freedom, and the ability to soar above life’s challenges. This work of art is a tribute to the second graders’ ancestors’ struggles and sacrifices for their families to have a better future. Each kite depicts a student’s country of origin, family name, and traits they most cherish. Their families’ beliefs and determination lift their spirits and allow their kites to climb. Hanging in your family room, office, or child’s bedroom is a reminder of our roots, dreams, and aspirations.

Woven fibers
Third-grade
Inspired by the fabric art of Korean artist Lee Shinja, Vacation is an abstract representation of nature and its harmony. The piece is inspired by the third-graders’ pleas for more weaving assignments. Third-grade students used a piece of wood and yarn to create a serene seascape, an image of the sky, the ocean, the sand and shells, and seaweeds washed ashore. Their creation is a testament to the fact that they have mastered the weaving technique.

Embossed copper
Fourth-grade
In Chinese culture, the horse is a symbol that has a great deal of meaning and history. Horses are associated with speed, independence, perseverance, and strength. Those born in the Year of The Horse are considered high-spirited, active, and energetic. Our fourth-grade artists used their energy to explore copper embossing for the first time. They used the technique of stamping and indented a metal sheet to create a raised image of wild horses framed by a distant mountain range. The genre and the skillful application of this old art form make this a wonderful addition to a library, office, or formal living space.

Oil pastels on paper
Fifth-grade
As it happens, many of the children in this class were born in the Year of The Dragon.
So what better way to memorialize this year and all the birthdays than to create a classic likeness of this sacred creature? The fifth-grade students selected the theme, voted to have Amber’s version of a dragon, and then spent many hours carefully constructing their dragon with bright-colored oil pastels. Determined to make the project happen, they sacrificed recess, Spanish, and math instruction to complete their beloved assignment. The dragon is a good representation of our fifth-grade students’ strength and determination.

Paper on glass lantern
Sixth-grade
Inspired by the use of lanterns in celebrations, the sixth-grade students have created a lantern for our annual gala and as their parting gift to Del Mar Pines. These young artists show off their drawing skills and an understanding of ratios and proportions by carefully crafting realistic silhouettes of forest animals and trees. When lit, the silhouettes create a magical scene. Whether in the library, a covered patio, or a bedroom, the illuminated forest is a wonderful keepsake of our sixth-graders time at Del Mar Pines.
