Glazed Ceramic

The dictionary defines a “gathering” as an assembly or a meeting, primarily a social or festive one or one held for a specific purpose. The 20 individually formed birds, fashioned by our very young sculptors, have gathered on a branch. The sculpture symbolizes the creators’  joyful assembly at DMP to learn and socialize. The commencement of skills and relationships that will continue for years. A photograph of each student’s contribution to this sculpture is included in their Artsonia portfolio.

Our fourth-grade students learned about the California region in their social studies. They have captured one of the region’s most notable attributes, its breathtaking sunsets, by skillfully painting an ocean view on natural wood. The seascape, a symphony of colors, is superimposed with Rangoli-inspired patterns typically found in Indian art. The fusion of east and west art is an attempt to bring spirituality, good luck, and prosperity to those that possess the piece. Our ancestors left their homelands to come to America, dreaming big and wanting to change the world for the better. They did not travel alone. With them came their stories, traditions, and values. Their traditions enabled them to endure the obstacles and embrace the unknown. The artwork that the second graders have created as a group symbolizes this voyage. It shows their family name and the various countries and virtues that each of their families has used to navigate through the journey. Their history and values are their legacies.

Third-grade students’ explored “volume” and “form” in their studies this year. They also learned that direct observation is key in turning out realistic representational works of art. This decorative and functional work of art is a culmination of their efforts to represent their environment as three-dimensional forms. Each artist has sculpted several creatures that you might view visiting one of San Diego's numerous shorelines.

Nature never ceases to amaze us. Simple seed pods are the inspiration behind this abstract design. Like our artist predecessors, Ansel Adams, John James Audobon, and Andrew Loyd Wright, who were fascinated by nature, our fifth-grade artists use objects found in nature to create an avant-garde and minimalistic arrangement. The 6th-grade class created this delightful abstract bouquet of flowers using acrylic paints and string. Each of the students chose a color or color scheme as well as a pattern for their individual string contribution. By using their imaginations, and simply pulling a string, dipped in paint, on a wet canvas, you can see the possibilities are endless! A very successful application of the elements of art “line, “color” and “pattern”.
